The Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday had approached the Supreme Court to challenge a Karnataka High Court order that has given Twitter India MD Manish Maheshwari temporary protection from arrest in connection with an FIR over tweets about the assault of a Muslim man near Delhi.
A single-judge bench of Justice G Narender of the Karnataka High Court, Last week, had refrained Uttar Pradesh Police from taking any coercive action against the Twitter Head who was first summoned by the state as a witness and later served notice as an accused charged with intent to riot, promoting enmity and criminal conspiracy. The court also said Mr Maheshwari is a Bengaluru resident no need to travel to UP now.
Mr Maheshwari also approached the top court and filed a caveat asking the court to hear his side before passing any orders on UP Police’s appeal.
The case pertains to a video clip of an old man in Ghaziabad which went viral. After which a complaint was lodged against the MD of Twitter India in the Ghaziabad Police Station./ILNS/SS/SNG
