SC has highest respect for womanhood: CJI

New Delhi, Mar 8 (ILNS) On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Chief Justice of India SA Bobde on Monday said the Supreme Court has the highest respect for womanhood.

Justice Bobde, who received a lot of flak for asking a rape accused to marry the victim, said the news reports and activists misreported his “Will you marry her” remark, to create a controversy and tarnish the image of the apex court.

The Chief Justice explained that he never asked the petitioner to marry the victim and that the reputation of the Supreme Court lies at the hands of the Bar. The comment was made by the Chief Justice, while hearing a plea by a 14-year-old, seeking permission to terminate her 26-week pregnancy.

The petitioner, belonging to the state of Haryana, had alleged that she was “cruelly raped” by her cousin, which led to the unwanted pregnancy.

The Court had issued notice and directed the medical board in Karnal to submit its report on the previous hearing. It had also directed the state of Haryana to submit the report in a sealed cover by March 8. The bench today listed the matter for next hearing on Friday. ILNS/SNG/JR
