SC flays Centre over lack of parity in vaccination, wants complete data

-

New Delhi, June 2 (ILNS): The Supreme Court today called the Centre’s policy to allow free vaccination of health workers, frontline workers and those in above 45 age group, but permit private hospitals to charge those in 18-45 age group as arbitrary and irrational. The apex court said that the issue of vaccination is absolutely essential and termed it as he “singular most important task” for the governments.
The top court referred to Union Budget 2021-22 which earmarked Rs 35,000 crore for procuring vaccines. It asked the Centre to clarify as to “How these funds have been spent so far and why these funds cannot be utilised for vaccinating all (free of cost) in the 18-44 group.”
The court asked the Centre to provide data on percentage of population that has been vaccinated (both single and double dose) and indicate the percentage of rural population which have been vaccinated so far.
Court sought complete data on Central government’s purchase history of all Covid-19 vaccines – Covishield, Covaxin and Sputnik V – till date and indicate the date of placing order, quantity of vaccine ordered and projected date of supply. ILNS\SS\SJ
