SC dismisses plea seeking 100 pc checking of VVPAT filed by Trinamool leader Gopal Seth

New Delhi, Apr 19 (ILNS) The Supreme Court today dismissed a Public Interest Litigation, seeking direction for physical verification of Electronic Voting Machine using 100 percent Voter-Verified Paper Audit Trial (VVPAT) assistance.

A Bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde, Justice AS Bopanna and Justice V Ramasubramanian said, “Voting is over, we are not going to interfere in the middle of the election process.”

The petition has been filed by Trinamool Congress Leader Gopal Seth, seeking 100 percent verification of Electronic Voting Machine using 100 percent VVPAT, ensuring transparency in election results.

The Counsel appearing for Mr Seth submitted that a 100 percent VVPAT assistance should be made, to which the Chief Justice enquired, “Have you made the representation to Election Commission of India?”

The Counsel informed the Court that they have already made a representation to the EC and that they have appreciated it. However, the Bench, while dismissing the plea, stated, “Certainly we can do, but we don’t want to do.” ILNS/KR/SNG/RJ
