New Delhi, Jun 29 (ILNS) The Supreme Court today directed all states and Union Territories (UTs) of the country to implement the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme by July 31.
A three-Judge Bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, Vineet Saran and MR Shah pronounced its verdict in a suo motu matter titled ‘In Re: Problems and Miseries of Migrant Labourers,’ dealing with the problems and miseries of migrant labourers, who had been stranded in different parts of the country, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The apex court directed the Centre to distribute additional foodgrains to the states, as per the demand raised by them.
It further ordered the Centre, states and the UTs to complete the process of portal for national database for unorganised workers by July 31.
The States and UTs should register all contractors as soon as possible and ensure registration of all migrant workers, added the Court.
The Bench said the states should set up appropriate schemes for distribution of dry ration, as also setting up of community kitchens, for the benefit of migrant workers.
All schemes must be implement by July 31 and should continue at least till this pandemic gets over, observed the Bench. ILNS/KR/RJ
