Allahabad, Oct 5 (ILNS) A letter petition has been filed in the Allahabad High Court, seeking a CBI probe into the recent violence at Lakhimpur Kheri, in which eight people died and several were injured on October 3.
The petition, moved by NGO Swadesh and Prayag Legal Aid Clinic through Advocate Gaurav Dwivedi, further prayed for the initiation of an independent judicial inquiry under the monitoring of the High Court in the present matter.
According to the petition, due to this dreadful incident, the law and order in the state of Uttar Pradesh was in great danger and any mishappening could take place if preventive actions were not taken by the state government at the earliest.
The plea further alleged that the state government failed to secure the Right to Life and Personal Liberty guaranteed by Article 21 of the Constitution of India of the deceased.
On Sunday, four farmers were among eight persons killed after a convoy of three SUVs, including one owned by Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra, hit a group of farmer protesters, leading to a clash. The farmers had assembled to protest against Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya’s visit to Banbirpur.
The incident took place in Tikunia village, which is connected to Banbirpur by a road that was occupied by the agitators. Banbirpur is the native village of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Misra Teni, MP from Lakhimpur Kheri.
On Monday, police registered an FIR on charges of murder against Mishra’s son Ashish, who was allegedly driving one of the vehicles. The state government announced Rs 45 lakh compensation each for the families of the deceased. Further, a judicial committee headed by a senior judge will probe the incident./ILNS/SS/SNG
