New Delhi, May 7 (ILNS): Supreme Court Chief Justice NV Ramana, during a hearing today, informed the court about the demise of former Supreme Court judge, Justice MY Iqbal.
Justice Iqbal passed away last night. Later, the court issued a circular on the same.
Justice Iqbal passed away at Medanta Hospital, Gurgaon, at 2331 hrs yesterday. The Circular said: “The last rites would be performed today, on May 7, 2021 at Panj Peeran Kabristaan, Nizamuddin at around 1330 hrs.”
The 70-year-old was a Judge in the apex court from December, 2012 to February, 2016. He had earlier served as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. On May 9, 1996, he was appointed as a permanent Judge in the Patna High Court. Earlier, he used to practice as a lawyer in the Patna High Court.
He was enrolled as Advocate in 1975 and initially practised exclusively on the civil side in civil courts in Ranchi. He shifted practice to the Ranchi Bench of the Patna High Court in 1986 and became the Government Pleader in the Ranchi Bench of Patna High Court in 1990.
In 1993, he became Government Advocate in the High Court. During this period, he practised on the civil, criminal, constitutional and tax sides. He also worked as retained Counsel and Legal Advisor of almost all the banks, insurance companies, electricity board, housing board, university and other Government and semi- Government Undertakings.
