New Delhi, Apr 16 (ILNS) A Delhi Court today extended the interim bail petition of former Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea till May 4 in a money laundering case related to the INX Media deal.
The Reader of the Special CBI Judge M K Nagpal of Rouse Avenue Court said that since the judge is on leave, as he is suffering from COVID-19, the interim bail given to Peter Mukerjea, facing trial in the money laundering case regarding the INX Media, stands extended and posted the matter for May 4.
Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram, also accused in the case, marked their virtual presence.
Earlier on April 7, the same Court had exempted former finance minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti from appearing in person in the INX Media deal case, after noting that the father-son duo was busy in the elections of Tamil Nadu, where they were the ‘Star Campaigners’. The Court had also issued notice to all accused in the INX Media money laundering case, after taking cognisance of the Enforcement Directorate (ED)’s chargesheet.
The case pertains to alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted to INX Media at the time when P Chidambaram was Union Finance Minister. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleged that P Chidambaram and his son Karti had received illegal gratification from INX Media owners Peter and Indrani Mukherjea for the clearance.
INX Media Pvt Ltd, Advantage Strategic companies, Kriya FMCG Distributors Pvt Ltd, and North Star Software Solutions are also named in the charge sheet.
The Special CBI Court had taken cognisance of the CBI’s charge sheet against Chidambaram, Karti and others on October 21, 2019. Cognisance of the ED’s charge sheet was taken on March 24 this year, with the Court opining that there were sufficient material and grounds for proceeding against all the 10 accused. ILNS/ANB/SNG/RJ
