New Delhi, Apr 19 (ILNS): Former Apex Court Judge Manoj Kumar Mukherjee, who served as the Chief Justice in both Allahabad High Court and the Bombay High Court, passed away in a Kolkata hospital on Saturday at the age of 87.
Justice Mukherjee was born on December 1, 1933. After graduating in Science from Presidency, Justice Mukherjee studied Law at the Calcutta University. He joined the Asansol bar in November, 1956 and practised in the Sub-Divisional and District Court and Labour Tribunal till 1971.
He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Calcutta High Court on June 17, 1977. He was made a permanent Judge of the same High Court on December 8, 1977.
Justice Mukherjee was made the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court in November, 1991. In January, 1993, he became the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. He became a Supreme Court Judge in December, 1993 and retired from the apex court in December, 1998.
After his retirement from the apex court in 1998, Justice Mukherjee was appointed by the Centre as the Chairperson of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Disappearance Commission for Inquiry in May, 1999, which concluded that Bose did not die in a plane crash and that the ashes in Renkoji temple, Japan were not those of Bose.
