New Delhi, Jul 8 (ILNS) The Delhi High Court today questioned Saket Gokhale, a free- lance journalist for his alleged defamatory tweets against former diplomat Ms. Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri, without veryfying facts from any government authority.
A single bench of Justice C. Hari Shankar while hearing a defamation suit filed by Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri through a team of lawyers from Karanjawala & Company seeking Rs five crore damages from Gokhale and also a direction to him to take down or delete the tweets, wherein false and factually incorrect, per-se defamatory, slanderous and libellous statements / imputations have been made against her and her family.
The Court while hearing extensive arguments advanced by Senior Advocate Maninder Singh (Former ASG) in a suit filed by Karanjawala & Company, seeking Mandatory Injunction, Damages and Costs along with interim reliefs on behalf of Ms. Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri for his alleged defamatory, slanderous and libellous Tweets, Observed that right to reputation is recognised as a fundamental right.
The Court asked Gokhale, also a freelance journalist, as to how he can vilify people, particularly when the tweets put out by him were prima facie incorrect
Senior advocate Maninder Singh appearing for the petitioner was briefed by a team from Karanjawala & Company comprising of Ms. Meghna Mishra Partner along with Mr. Dheeraj P. Deo and Mr. Tarun Sharma advocates.
Mr. Sarim Naved-Advocate represented the Defendant Saket Gokhale.
The Court after hearing detailed arguments from both the sides reserved its orders to be pronounced on July 13, 2021.
Gokhale, in his tweets On June 13 and 26 made reference to certain property purchased by Puri in Switzerland and also referred to her husband Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri./ILNS/SNG
