Fake vaccine camps: Calcutta HC wants state govt to file detailed affidavit on progress of investigation

New Delhi, Jul 2 (ILNS) The massive scam of a fake vaccine camp, run with impunity by a man posing as an IAS officer for long and even moved around in a car with blue flashing lights, has now come up before the Calcutta High Court.

Today, the first Bench of the Court, comprising Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice Arijit Banerjee, asked the state government to file a detailed affidavit on the progress of investigation into this case, where over 800 people had been ‘vaccinated’ with fake Covid vaccines.

The Court asked the state government to provide details of all the camps that accused Debanjan Deb had conducted. Kolkata Police has arrested Deb, but it is the general belief that such impunity and arrogance by Deb, through which he even had Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mimi Chakraborty also to come over and get ‘vaccinated’ with a fake vaccine, could not have happened without the active connivance of politicians and even the police.

The substance injected into unsuspecting people at the camps organised by Deb was said to be the antibiotic Amikacin. The state government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for this.

Several PILs had landed before the court in this regard, seeking independent investigation by a central agency into the matter. Among the appellants is also the Vice President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, who is also an advocate at the court. He alleged that in West Bengal, the vaccines are not available in Government hospitals, but they are available in several private hospitals and vaccination camps, which are being organised by Clubs, societies and some leaders of TMC.

This PIL took the scam to a political level. It also alleged that there was a possibility that free vaccines provided by the Central Government were being transferred to private hospitals and other organisations illegally. ILNS\SJ\RJ
