DHC directs MEA to pursue request of urgent Visa for mother of ailing son

New Delhi, Jun 17 (ILNS) The Delhi High Court has issued notice to the Centre on a plea filed by a woman seeking directions to the Ministry of External Affairs for assisting in procuring Visa from the Australian High Commission and providing appropriate medical assistance to her ailing son in Australia.

A Single-Judge Bench of Justice Navin Chawla said that the Union of India must take appropriate steps to make sure the petitioner and mother of one Arshdeep Singh gets her requisite visa to visit her son, who is suffering from a life-threatening disease.

The petition stated, “The petitioner addressed a letter to the High Commissioner of Australia, pointing out the critical condition of her son. She said she wanted to urgently travel to Australia to look after Arshdeep Singh, provide him with moral support and to take all such appropriate steps for his immediate treatment as required. A request was made to facilitate and grant appropriate visa to the petitioners on humanitarian grounds. A further request was made that Arshdeep Singh be provided with appropriate immediate medical assistance.”

It further stated that the petitioner applied for Visa Visitor (Tourist) Sub-Class 600. They also submitted their Travel Exemption Approval Form was required due to COVID-19 global pandemic.

The petitioner requested the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India and the Counsel General, Indian High Commission in Australia by email to help the petitioner in obtaining a visitor visa and facilitate their visit to Australia however, she got no reply to her requests.

The Counsel appearing for the Ministry of External affairs submitted that the process with regards to the visa application is ongoing and that all efforts are being made by the MEA and the Indian Embassy in Australia.

While issuing notice, the Court directed the MEA to file a status report on the next date.

The matter is listed for further hearing on July 18. ILNS/ANR/RJ
