Delhi to have its own genome sequencing labs to study mutations of COVID-19: Delhi Health Minister

-

New Delhi, Jul 1 (ILNS) Gearing up for the third wave of COVID-19, Delhi Health Minister Satyender Jain has said that Two Genome Sequencing Labs are being set up in the national capital, which will study the mutating Novel Coronavirus.

These labs will become functional in a week’s time. One will be set up at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital and the other at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS).

The Two genome sequencing labs will take samples and study the mutating coronavirus in the state. Earlier, such samples were being sent to the Central Government for the study. Now, Delhi has also procured this technique and tests will be performed in the state itself, he added.

According to Mr Jain, “We are preparing for the third wave taking in account a maximum of 37,000 cases per day are expected, Mr Satyendar Jain said. He also stressed the need to keep following the Covid appropriate behaviour.

“The last wave which Delhi witnessed, was of Delta variant. The coronavirus mutates continuously. There are multiple variants such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta etc. There have been no cases of Delta plus variants in Delhi so far.” He added, “We are aggressively preparing for the pandemic. We have not received any notice from the Central Government which states that there should be a particular kind of preparation for the Delta plus variant. Be it any variant, vaccination and using a face mask are the two ways to prevent infection.”

While responding to the queries about actions taken on markets, Mr Satyendar Jain said, “The Covid Guidelines need to be strictly followed. Last time during January and February, when the Covid cases came down, like this time, people got complacent. People thought that corona was gone. It seems that it has not gone yet but it still persists.” Mr Jain added, “Delhi has witnessed four Covid waves while the country has seen two Covid waves. Having the experience of 1.5 years, it is known to us that to be safe, we have to follow Covid appropriate behavior”.

Yesterday, Delhi recorded 94 Corona positive cases besides 6 deaths. 79,935 Covid tests were conducted. Consistently, about 75-80 thousand tests are being conducted daily. The positivity rate is 0.12%.” Mr Jain stated, “The corona situation in Delhi has been under control for the last few days. We still need to be alert and urge everyone who steps out of the home should wear a mask.”

Mr Jain said, “There could be the 5th and 3rd Covid wave for Delhi and the entire country, respectively. We have prepared fully. There was an availability of 28,000 thousand Covid beds and we are also preparing to expand it to 37,000 beds. Last time it was not that much, but we are preparing more this time. For oxygen, many oxygen PSA and storage plants have been set up.”ILNS/SNG/RJ
