Delhi HC issues notice to Delhi Police on plea seeking protection to businessman

-

New Delhi, Jun 28 (ILNS) The Delhi High Court recently issued notice to the Delhi Police and asked it to file a status report in a plea filed by a businessman seeking directions to protect his life from unknown assailants.

A Single-Judge Vacation Bench of Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani issued direction to the City Police, wherein the petitioner and his employees have been repeatedly targeted by unknown assailants in and around their place of work in Chandni Chowk.

Tanmaya Mehta, Counsel appearing for the petitioner, submitted that though the petitioner and his employees have been attacked by unknown assailants without any provocation on June 14, 2021 and June 19, 2021, the petitioner suspects that the attacks have been orchestrated by or at the instance of some persons, who are inimical to the petitioner.

Mr Mehta further submitted that one of the petitioner’s employees, who has a body and build similar to that of the petitioner, has in fact sustained grievous injuries with a sharp knife-like object on his back and neck, that required the employee to get 45 stitches.

He further submitted that in regard to the attacks, two separate FIRs, one by the petitioner and another by his employee, have been filed in the recent past; but no tangible action appears to have been taken by the concerned police.

Additional Standing Counsel (ASC) (Criminal) Richa Kapoor, appearing on behalf of the respondent, submitted that she will take instructions as to the status of investigation in the FIRs lodged in the case. Ms Kapoor further stated that while it would not be possible to assign individual officers to protect the petitioner or his employee, she will instruct that necessary steps are taken to sensitise the local police in relation to the petitioner’s threat perception; and will also issue necessary instructions that local police should respond quickly to any complaint received from him.

The petitioners will be given the cellphone numbers of the SHO, Police Station Kotwali and of the concerned beat officer, who he may approach in any eventuality, added the ASC. The matter will now be taken up before the Roster Bench on July 9, 2021. ILNS/BG/RJ/SNG
