Delhi Cantt rape: Delhi High Court to take up plea seeking court-monitored SIT inquiry into the incident

New Delhi Aug 17(ILNS): The Delhi High Court will today hear a petition seeking judicial inquiry and constitution of a court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) filed by parents of a nine-year-old gild child, who was allegedly gang-raped, murdered, and her body forcibly cremated by her attackers, including a priest at Old Nangal village of the national capital.

A Single-judge Bench comprising of Justice Yogesh Khanna will hear the plea filed through Advocates Jitendra Kumar Jha, Sarsij Nayanam, and Suresh Kumar, praying for a judicial inquiry pertaining to lapses in the administrative action in the matter; and directions for providing adequate safety and security to the parents of the girl as well as to other witnesses of the alleged incident.

On August 1, 2021, a nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped and killed by the priest of a crematorium and three others in the Delhi Cantonment area. The girl had gone to fetch water from the water cooler at the crematorium in the evening. When her mother reached the crematorium in search of her, the priest of the crematorium informed her that her daughter had died due to electrocution.

The plea alleged that the accused offered Rs 20,000 to the mother of the girl for not reporting the incident. “When the petitioners, who have immense faith in the judicial system, did not agree to the ploy of the accused, the accused forcefully threw the body of the girl in a burning pyre,” the plea added.

Claiming a lacuna in the administrative action, the plea stated that police tried to sabotage the incident and pressurized the parents of the girl to compromise the case. Furthermore, the FIR was registered after much delay and the crime scene remained unattended by the police.

Recently, a Delhi Court directed the New Delhi-Delhi State Legal Services Authority (NDDLSA) to grant interim compensation to the tune of Rs. 2.5 lakh to the family of the girl./ILNS
