Class XII exam: SC asks govt to place before it objective criteria for assessment of marks

New Delhi, Jun 3 (ILNS): The Supreme Court today directed the CBSE and CICSE to place on record the objective criteria for assessment of marks in two weeks, while noting that it is happy that the Centre has taken the decision to cancel the Class XII exams.

“We are happy to note that government has taken decision to cancel class XII exams, but we want that the objective criteria fixed for assessment of marks be placed before us,” said the Division Bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari.

The Court adjourned the matter and listed it after two weeks, sticking to the request of Attorney General KK Venugopal for the new criteria for the assessment of exams. “For the cancellation of exams, what are the principles and criteria that you are applying?” the court asked the Attorney General.

The AG stated that the guidelines will be placed on record and requested that the matter be adjourned for two weeks.

Senior Counsel JK Das, representing CICSE, requested the court to provide four weeks for the final hearing.

Justice Khanwilkar denied the request and stated: “The learned Attorney General by understanding the urgency has asked for 2 weeks and the court will be following that, and further please don’t bargain for 4 weeks.”

Petitioner-in-person, Mamta Sharma, mentioned about 1.2 crore students in the state board. The court also requested the petitioner to have patience and assured that the court will be making decisions for all CBSE, ICSE and other board students. ILNS\KR\SJ\RJ
