New Delhi, May 31 (ILNS): Justice DY Chandrachud of the Supreme Court has come out with a sarcastic observation about actions being taken in the state of Uttar Pradesh against people complaining against lack of facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He has been recently quoted as asking if a sedition case has been lodged against a channel, which showed a dead body being dropped into the river from a bridge in Uttar Pradesh.
This was possibly an oblique reference to recent incidents where an FIR had been lodged against one person who had just complained to the media that there were no medical facilities available in his area regarding Covid.
The oblique observation came while the court was hearing a suo motu matter related to the Covid 19 situation in the country.
The issued related to dignified disposal of Covid dead bodies raised after Amicus Meenakshi Arora submitted before the court that regarding crematoriums “we have seen of late there is no dignity in death. There are many crematoriums which are not working across the country.”
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta hadcountered: “There is a suo motu case regarding dignified handling of the dead.”
Amicus, Senior Advocate Meenakshi Arora said: “That may be so, the poor are unable to dispose of the dead. Why cannot the state give a ritual semblance to the disposal of the dead?”
Justice LN Rao said: “Yesterday we saw that dead bodies were thrown in the river.”
At that Justice DY Chandrachud commented: “A news report yesterday showed that dead bodies were being thrown into the river. I don’t know if a sedition case has been filed against the news channel yet or not.” ILNS\KR\SJ\RJ
