Mumbai Sept 20(ILNS): The Bombay High Court recently issued notice to the respondents including the Ministry of Climate Change, Government of Maharashtra, in a Suo Moto Public interest Litigation (PIL) concerning threat to the habitat of Sarus-Crane birds.
The Division Bench comprising of Justice Sunil B. Shukre and Justice Anil S. Kilor has heard a Suo Moto PIL raising the issue of fundamental importance to the environment and forest of not only Vidarbha Region but the whole of India for the reason that the habitat of Saras-Cranes bird is under threat which has resulted in dwindling of the population of this bird and it has further pushed the bird towards its extinction.
“Suffice it to say that as the issue is important from the viewpoint of forest and environment not only in Vidarbha Region but the whole of India, and a threat to the habitat of Sarus-Crane birds, notice is required to be issued”, the order reads.
On July 05, the Court observed that a proper petition is required to be filed and therefore appointed Radhika Bajaj, as Amicus Curiae to assist the Court.
Moreover, the Maharashtra State Biodiversity Board, Pune, was added as a party in the Petition./ILNS/SS/SNG
